Tata, Taiwan’s Psmc to Set Up India’s First Chip Fab Unit in Gujarat’s Dholera

The big news is that the first chip fabrication plant in India will be established in Dholera, Gujarat, by the joint venture between the Tata Group and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the facility will require an investment of Rs 91,000 crore, and building will start within 100 days following a cabinet meeting on Thursday. The plant can produce 50,000 wafers in a month. According to him, there are roughly 5,000 chips on each wafer, with a 300 crore chip capacity annually.

Two more semiconductor units were also approved by the government. The joint venture between CG Power, Renesas Electronics, and Stars Microelectronics in Sanand, Gujarat, and Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Unit in Assam.

According to Vaishnaw, the three semiconductor facilities will receive a total of Rs 1,26,000 crore in investments. With these new permissions, India now has four semiconductor units, including the June 2023 approved semiconductor assembly and test facility in Gujarat owned by Micron. According to Vaishnaw, the three units sanctioned today and Micron’s factory approved before have received a total outlay of Rs 59,000 crore.

In 2021, the government announced the PLI scheme for semiconductors, which would require an expenditure of Rs 76,000 crore. The government is attempting to shorten the three- to four-year construction period for semiconductor units. By December 2024, the Micron unit is expected to launch its first chip.
