Dholera – Ahmedabad Expressway: India’s First High Speed Integrated Multi Modal Corridor to Be Completed by January 2024
Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, checked on the development of Gujarat’s Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway’s package-1. A total of Rs 4,200 crore is being spent on the development of this 109 kilometre long greenfield corridor. It will serve as a crucial link between Ahmedabad and the numerous special investment zones in Dholera and will also be a major talking point for avirahi group of companies. With the construction of the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, travel between the two cities would be possible at high speeds and cut from the current two and a half hours to around an hour. Moreover, with the development of avirahi city dholera, it will offer direct access to the Dholera airport.
This motorway near is expected to be 120 metres wide, of which 90 metres will be used for the motorway and the remaining 30 metres will be used for a future railway corridor. The highway connects Navagam’s Dholera International Airport and Sardar Patel Ring Road, which is close to the Dholera Special Investment Zone, with Sarkhej (SIR). Hence, the motorway will also help to speed up industrial activity in Dholera and Ahmedabad. After touring the building site and speaking with the media, union minister Gadkari stated that the highway project’s completion goal is January 2024.
According to him, the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway is the country’s first high-speed, integrated multimodal corridor that combines both a railroad and a motorway. One can anticipate that this integration of the rail line with the motorway will eventually open the door for an RRTS corridor that runs from Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar via Dholera.
Rise of Dholera
On the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) section of Gujarat, the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) is a greenfield industrial city that is currently being built. With a 920 sq.km area, DSIR is positioned to be the largest greenfield smart city in India. It is organised into six sub-centers and twelve zones. The area includes residential areas with internal roads measuring 12 metres and property sizes of at least 200 square metres.
The minimum sublease area with an internal road of 18 metres is 1,000 square metres for non-polluting companies. One distinctive aspect of the city is a 1,000-acre special education zone. Moreover, DSIR intends to have regions specifically designated for city centre, logistics, sports, IT and knowledge centres, and recreation. The city authorises multi-story buildings of upto 50 storeys.
The Union Government sanctioned the construction of Phase I of a new greenfield Airport in Dholera in Gujarat in June 2022 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,305 crore. This growing greenfield city will now also have an airport. The Dholera Special Investment Area (DSIR) will be a key source of passenger and cargo traffic for Dholera Airport, which is anticipated to grow into a significant cargo hub to serve the industrial area.
